Prevention and Treatment of Oral
Disease
Current
dental research has clearly shown that the progression of
dental caries and gingivitis can be reversed in early stages,
as well as prevented. Based on these scientific evidence,
preventive dentistry focuses mainly on the removal of dental
bacterial plaque and the resistance of
teeth against caries.
The
preventive measures that have been practiced in modern dentistry
are:
- The use
of toothbrush and dental floss as means of oral hygiene
- The decreased
consumption of carbohydrates, mainly sugar.
- The use
of fluoride in all forms. This measure increases the
resistance of teeth against dental caries.
Using a toothbrush
from an early age reassures the establishment of good oral
hygiene habits. However, parents are still responsible
for the effective and proper way of cleaning a kid's teeth.
PREVENTION
Visiting a Pediatric Dentist should be repeared every 6 months.
A 6-month recall appointment is necessary for the diagnosis
of dental caries at an early stage. It should be added
that in every recall fluoride treatment is being performed.

TREATMENT
When a Pediatric Dentist has diagnosed dental caries , he/she
uses state-of-art material for the restoration of teeth.
In case of extensive caries, the possibility of root canal
treatment and stainless steel crown as the final restoration
may be considered.
In certain cases, extracting a tooth may be inevitable.
When a primary (baby) tooth needs to be extracted, the space
left should be maintained using specially designed orthodontic
appliances.
Conclusively, the aim of a Pediatric Dentist's intervention
is the restoration of a child's oral health, function and
esthetics. Oral health is a significant parameter in
the physiologic development of children.
