Dental trauma

Injury to the teeth and the tissues that surround and support the tooth (periodontium) is very common during childhood and adolescence. PROMPT and CORRECT treatment improves the prognosis of tooth injuries and reduces the occurrence of undesired consequences.

Toothache

Toothache and damage to teeth in children and adolescents are the most common causes for emergency visits to the Pediatric Dentist in search of pain relief. In most cases, the cause is caries that has affected the pulp or has already caused necrosis, with a possible manifestation of an abscess.

Pain in the gums or the inside of the mouth

Children and adolescents frequently complain about gum bleeding and pain, particularly during toothbrushing, caused by an inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). On some other occasions, the pain is experienced on the inside of the mouth and is caused by small sores, known as aphthous ulcers.

Bite tongue or lip

Numbness related to the use of a local aesthetic, after dental treatment is over, may cause the child to suck on or bite their lip, tongue or the inside of their cheek. This can often lead to a wound or severe swelling, accompanied by pain.

Bleeding following tooth extraction

Slight bleeding following a tooth extraction is normal. If it continues, it may be related to other general (e.g. problems with blood clotting) or local causes (e.g. the child may have irritated the wound with their hand or by sucking on it), especially when it is still numbed.

Problems with orthodontic appliance

Children who are undergoing orthodontic treatment, can sometimes be injured by broken hooks, wires or acrylics of the orthodontic appliances used resulting to damage to the gums, tongue, cheeks or lips.
